Since all positions needed to have a good level of numeracy, an understanding of using Excel and, most importantly, knowledge of the Sage accounting package, Paul asked candidates to undergo skills testing as part of the selection process. Applications were initially sifted to create a first phase shortlist based on CV’s. From here, all the shortlisted candidates were sent a link to take a variety of accounting assessments including using Sage. Only the top candidates were invited for interview since the team could be sure they had the knowledge to deliver in their role. “When there are plenty of candidates who seem the same on paper, it’s hard to know who to call for interview.
